Its culture and gastronomy has been influenced by the Moorish because it was inhabited by them after the 711 AD. This is why we can find villages on the hillsides with narrow streets and small flat-roofed houses.

After the ‘Reconquista’, Alpujarra was the last place where Moorish had been living in. After the Moorish revolts, they were ordered to leave Spain. Only a few that were converted to Christianity were allowed to stay. They taught the new inhabitants how to obtain the silk from the silkworms. This is how the silk industry started in the Alpujarra
