The Alpujarra is a natural and historical region of Andalusia, situated on the southern part of Sierra Nevada. It is about 1200 meters above the sea level and it extends over two provinces, Granada and Almería.

This Spanish region had been influenced by the Moorish. In Arabic, the Alpujarra means "sierra of pastures". It is the locality where the Moorish rose up against the Christians and an important strategic position during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

The Alpujarra is just near Sierra Nevada that was named UNESCO Biosphere reserve in 1999. Nowadays, in the Alpujarra live more than 25.000 of people, while in Órgiva , that is the administrative centre, live about 5.000.
